Inauguration

Donald Trump got inaugurated on January 20, 2025. He came in with a fierce agenda and with many campaign promises. On his first day he signed many executive orders and got many things done. Perhaps he completely overhauled the white house website's graphics too, or I may have just not signed onto the website in a while. Anyhow, what did he do? Does it line up with what he said he would do? And what does that mean for the average citizen? These are all interesting questions that need answers.

Tik Tok Ban

A ban of the app Tik Tok was scheduled to take affect on January 19, 2025. Reportedly the app was taken down for a few hours before President Trump's inauguration. After which point he signed an executive order holding off the enforcement of the ban for 75 days.

The ban was initially encouraged by President Trump in his previous presidency and then passed during President Biden's presidency. However, it seems that Trump has learned how to utilize the app and now is seeking to convince an American buyer to buy the app so that Americans' information is secure and so that Americans can continue to use the app.

In preparation for the ban, the Tik Tok community found a new Chinese app to upload short form videos to called "Red Note" or "Little Red Book." This app requires all users to abide by Chinese communication laws. Therefore many individuals may be surprised if they ever wish to visit China as they may be arrested.

Chinese users of Red Note seem to have conflicting views of Americans on the app. One individual pretended to be the CEO of the app welcoming Americans onto the app. Other Chinese users have reportedly indicated that Red Note is more of a local app similar to Instagram and American users are conflicting with the culture.

Architecture

President Trump requires federal buildings to "be visually identifiable as civic buildings and respect regional, traditional, and classical architectural heritage in order to uplift and beautify public spaces." This indicates that instead of ugly government buildings, federal buildings will be encouraged to be beautiful similar to how the White House and Capitol building are. I am quite a fan of architecture and think too many people merely want a functional building these days.

Trump pardoned over 1,000 people who were arrested in relation to a protest on January 6th, 2021. This protest followed a speech conducted by then president Trump and was regarding concerns over the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election. Trump also issued commutations to 14 named individuals. While pardons remove the conviction from an individuals record, a commutation merely reduces the sentence and is often the result of prisoners proving good behavior. With a commutation, any individual convicted of a felony still loses their gun rights and voting rights.

Cabinet and Cabinet Level Appointees

California

President Trump requires the National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation and other agencies to restart work routing water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to other parts of the state. Apparently the president had been working on this on his last term before the governor of California sued to stop the work. Now the Secretary of Commerce and the Secretary of the Interior will have 90 days before they must report back to him regarding the status and recommendations.

Birthright Citizenship

President Trump issued an interpretation on the fourteenth amendment stating people who give birth while illegally within the United States do not automatically gain citizenship. The fourteenth amendment states that, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." Trump states that those illegally in the county are not "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" or else they would not be breaking the law in being in the country. This is in supposed contradiction to the 1898 court case of United States v. Wong Kim Ark which indicates that the exceptions implied are those of enemies occupying part of the country and children of another country's diplomatic diplomatic representatives. This case, however, is specifically in regards to someone who is permitted by the United States to reside within its borders. Therefore there does not seem to be clear direction regarding this interpretation and it will likely make its way back to the Supreme Court before President Trump leaves office.

Foreign Aid

President Trump has put a 90 day pause on all foreign aid to allow a review of each payment and to ensure it is disbursed in a way that is aligned with the interests of the country. Foreign aid can be reinstated earlier after it is reviewed, but if it has not been reviewed by the end of the 90 days it is automatically reimplemented.

Career Civil Servants

President Trump says that Performance Review Boards and Executive Resource Boards need to be disbanded and reformed to ensure career civil servants are held accountable to the president as executive. This order seems to primarily indicate federal employees must follow orders from the president and must not contradict President Trump's plans. Additionally, in another executive order he states that merit must be the defining issue when hiring. He states that commitment to certain ideas like "equity" and "gender identity" will not be permitted to be considered when hiring. Additionally new parameters for all future jobs must be drawn up with specific considerations in mind, such as an individuals "commit[ment] to improving the efficiency of the Federal Government," must be drawn up within 120 days.

Gender Ideology

In another inauguration day executive order, President Trump announced that men could not identify as women in order to be permitted entry into women's spaces. He states that biological facts should not be ignored in honor of a "sense of self" that varies. He officially stated that the government identifies "two sexes, male and female," and then goes on to define words such as male, female, boy, women, ect.

Honoring Patriots

On January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order concerning the naming of various landmarks. He renamed Mount Denali to Mount McKinley and the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Additionally, he authorized his Secretary of the Interior to identify and garner input regarding additional patriots to honor and to work with Alaskan Natives to honor their history and culture. This is in light of the upcoming "semiquincentennial celebration" or the quarter millennial, which celebrates the country's 250th year since it declared independence from Britain. This celebration will occur on July 4th, 2026.

Kennedy Assassination

On January 23, 2025, President Donald Trump utilized the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Act of 1992, which required all records related to the assassination of President Kennedy to be publicly disclosed in full by October 26, 2017, unless the President requests a postponement. This 2017 deadline was during President Trump's first presidency. Some information was determined to need to not be disclosed by President Trump in his first term and later by President Biden throughout his term in office. President Trump also included classified records regarding the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. These records will likely become available within the next few months. This is quite intriguing because President Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. both have vast conspiracy theories regarding the federal government potentially being behind their assassination. It will be quite interesting to learn why the federal government bothered classifying documents regarding these three mens' deaths.

Houthis Declared Terrorists

On January 22, 2025, the president declared the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, to be considered a Foreign Terrorist Organization. This group has ties to Hamas and made the news for conducting raids in the Red Sea.

DOGE

The long rumored Department of Governmental Efficiency or DOGE in reference to the popular internet meme has now been signed into existence by an executive order. The purpose of this 'department' is to "[modernize] Federal technology and software to maximize government efficiency and productivity." This department seems to come from a reformatting of the United States Digital Service into the United States DOGE Service or (USDS). It seems that Elon Musk will not get his hoped for acronym written nearly as many times in official documents as he may of originally hoped. Despite promising a position as co-heads of DOGE to Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, it seems there currently is no mention of it at this point. However, whenever I refresh the page new articles appear. So perhaps it will just take a minute to get announced.
